Thanksgiving and Cybersecurity: Protecting the Feast (and Your Network)

As we gather around the table this Thanksgiving to enjoy a perfectly roasted turkey, creamy mashed potatoes, and that infamous green bean casserole, it’s worth noting the parallels between a secure network and a well-prepared holiday feast. Just as we take care to ensure every dish is seasoned to perfection and every guest feels safe and welcome, we should also be mindful of the security of our digital spaces.

1. Turkey Timing and Patching:
The turkey won’t cook properly if you don’t monitor its temperature or adjust the oven accordingly. Similarly, unpatched software is like a raw bird—vulnerable and risky. Stay on top of updates and apply security patches promptly to ensure a “well-done” network.

2. Guard the Good Stuff:
Just as you’d keep an eye on the pie to ensure no one sneaks an early slice, you need to protect your sensitive data. Encrypt files and use robust access controls to make sure the digital “desserts” stay safe.

3. Don’t Overlook the Leftovers:
While you’re picking apart that last bone for leftover turkey sandwiches, consider this: attackers love overlooked assets in your network just as much. An unprotected IoT device or an unused admin account is the forgotten stuffing of your cybersecurity strategy—prone to spoilage if not properly secured.

4. Secure the Guest List:
At Thanksgiving, you wouldn’t invite someone you don’t trust to the table. The same rule applies to your network—implement strong authentication measures and vet all users and devices before granting access.

5. Beware of Phishy Side Dishes:
That mystery dish your cousin brought might look suspiciously like stuffing but turns out to be quinoa. Likewise, phishing attempts often masquerade as something familiar. Educate users to spot these “fishy” attempts before they spoil the feast.

As you enjoy your holiday, remember: while you’re picking apart that last bone, someone could be picking apart your network. Cybercriminals don’t take holidays, so be vigilant. With a little preparation, you can protect your network as skillfully as you protect your turkey.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Penetra Cybersecurity! Stay safe and secure—online and offline.
